Jägerkarabiner (Jaeger Carbine)

This image shows a couple of high standing heading out in their carriage for a hunt. The gentleman is holding a short rifle or Karabiner while his full size guns are in sleeves leaning against the Dashboard. Recently two examples of these short, compact Jäger’s have come to light. The first was made with a extension Butt Plate that is now missing, it has a 33cm or 13 inch Barrel, with and overall length of 58 cm or 23 inches without the butt plate extended, and would be about 4 to 6 inches longer with the butt plate extended. It is .54 caliber.

The second example is a fine one made by C. Keiner around 1760 and is , 56 caliber, with a 18 1/2 inch barrel and is 32 1/2 inches long overall and is no. 2 of a pair.

In England these would be referred to as Coach Guns and in America they would be called Buggy Rifles.
